July 12, 2015 Florissant Fossil Beds, Florissant, CO

On our drive from Colorado Springs to Buena Vista, we stopped along the way to investigate the Florissant Fossil Beds.  Oh my, what a treat!  A spectacular day in a magical place!  Amazing walk around this place, first through a ponderosa pine forest, then out across the open meadow;  we were huffing and puffing along at 8200 ft. elevation.  The whole area was once a lake and then a volcano erupted which sent a lahar down to bury everything in mud.

What a gorgeous day!
Small piece of petrified redwood, plus my shoe.
"The Big Stump"
Sego Lily - first one I've ever seen...

These things are HUGE, that's me in the pink...
Those black lines are bands of metal holding it together.

  1. Florissant Fossil Beds looks like a really neat place to visit. Me and Jimmy need to see it in person!
