April 3-8, 2016 Meaher State Park, Battleship Causeway, Mobile, Alabama

A good time to visit with old friends and loved ones - perfect weather and lovely springtime! Meaher State Park is a beautiful campground slap-dab in the middle of the Mobile Delta.  We have camped here before and love it.  There are tons-o-birds to see and hear, and a boardwalk, and a pier.  Plus it's centrally located and surrounded by wonderful seafood restaurants.  Who could ask for more?

The park now has two cabins.

Tuesday, we got together with my brother Rob and he was kind enough to take us to downtown Mobile, where we wandered around, in and out of Memory Lane.  I worked there, 1970-72, and things are mighty different nowadays.  Happily the Nut Shop is still there, complete with two nuts under the sign.

One of the places I worked;  back then it was Mutual Finance.  (now it's some kind of bar)
Such a beautiful place!

It's tradition:  visit the Nut Shop, buy nuts, feed squirrels....
Wintzell's:  still there after all these years!  Lunch was delish!
Me and my lil brudder, Rob.
We were very lucky that when we went up to the top (34th floor) of the old First National Bank Building (now the TrustMark Bldg.), the restaurant up there wasn't open yet but the bar was.  The hostess kindly allowed us to wander around the empty restaurant, oohing and aahing at the view on all three sides.  Here are just a couple of the many pictures we took, showing the Mobile River, upstream and down.

We always get together with one or more of the Simms kids when we are in town.  Bubba's family and their family were neighbors back in the Mobile (Driftwood Acres) days, and they all grew up together.  Here is a picture of us at Ed's Seafood Shed on the causeway.

Bubba in front;  then L-R Nannie, Sandy, Mike, Pat, Sheryl, and Freda.

We also got to spend an evening with Glenn Wayne Sewell, Bubba's former wife's younger brother. They have been in touch with Facebook and decided to get together.  Such a good guy!

Sorry, this is the only picture we got!  (Wayne's best side, eh?  LOL)

On another day, we got to see my brother again:  it was his 59th birthday, and he was riding his bike 59 miles to celebrate.  He rode from his house over on Dog River in south Mobile - and back! We rode our bikes across the causeway to the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center, where we visited the creatures they have on display - mostly snakes, fish, turtles.  But there are two owls there (asleep), and a wonderful little female kestrel named Kitty.  She had a broken wing and can no longer fly properly and thus they are training her in controlled flight.  They took advantage of our presence and "flew" her back and forth between us, getting her used to flying around people.  Lovely bird!

Happy Birthday, Rob!
Kitty the Kestrel.
Our final visit was with our dear friends Jim and Sherrye.  They have a wonderful place out in Theodore-Dawes, and we love to visit them at their home.  Plus, we get to see their "famous" beagle, Baxter!  Sorry we failed to get a picture of the four of us, but suffice to say we chattered and told stores and laughed for a good long time.

Baxter and me.....
