July 26, 2012 Glacier National Park, Going To The Sun Road

This park is simply spectacular. We spent all day yesterday in complete awe at being in the middle of these majestic mountains, the northern part of the Rockies. There is a road thru this park called "Going To The Sun Road" that could be considered dangerous.... But luckily for us there is a free shuttle! So we rode across to the east side, then back to the west side, hopping on and off at scenic areas. Starting out, we took the express shuttle at 7:20 a.m., and went straight to the center of the park at Logan Pass, on the continental divide at 6646 feet above sea level. When we arrived there, it was 50 degrees and in a cloud, and downright chilly. On our way back from the east side, we stopped for lunch beside lovely Saint Mary Lake, then we hiked a short ways in to Baring Falls at Sunrift Point.

When we got back to Logan Pass after lunch, it was perfect weather. We decided to hike a little ways on the Hidden Lake trail, but once we got started we could not stop. Words cannot express how breathtaking it is, hiking up there in the alpine snow with the mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Something we will never forget. If you ever get the chance, DO NOT miss this park!

Taking a sweet break after a short hike to Baring Falls at Sunrift Gorge. Bubba at Baring Falls. Mountain at Logan Pass wearing a cloud hat in the morning.

Raven and ground squirrel faceoff! Bubba at Logan Pass. Mr. Mountain Goat in his beautiful new coat after shedding his shaggy winter coat. I swear, these animals pose like this on purpose!

Cute kid! Bubba hamming it up for the camera. Nannie going thru a chilly spot on the trail.

HIdden Lake - seeing this was our reward for a 3 mile roundtrip hike thru the rocks & snow. Mr. Marmot, who ignored all the people staring at him. About the size of a nutria, but much cuter.
