August 13, 2015 Sherman Lake CCC Camp

On our drive west from Kettle Falls, WA on Hwy. 20, we spotted the Growden Heritage Site and pulled in to investigate.  A nice surprise!  The CCC (read more about the CCC here) had a camp here, as they built a dam to make a recreational lake.  Since Bubba's dad was in the CCC, we like to look at these kind of places.  This particular camp was called "Little America" because it housed enrollees from around the country.

When they built Hwy. 20 near the lake, it immediately began to fill with silt caused by the highway construction, and within years it was no longer a lake.  Then they restored the creek back to the way it was.  These signs tell the tale.

  1. We love looking at CCC work, they did such fine jobs wherever they were. Thanx, Pepaw!
