July 21, 2018 Wells Reserve, part of Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Kennebunkport, Me

Today we drove along some beach areas (very crowded on weekends!) and ended up down by the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge.  We missed our turn (as usual) and ended up at a wonderful place by accident, the Wells Reserve.  Formerly a farm, it was purchased and added to the National Wildlife Refuge.  Click the link to read about its history.

Water tower next to the ice house, which would
keep ice without melting for 12 months.
Nice old weather vane which is still functional.
Original farmhouse and gazebo.

After looking around the buildings a bit, we took off for the beach on a nice trail.
Really handsome guy.....
Tidal marsh at low tide.  At a really high tide, the trail is under water.
Atlantic Ocean beach with lots of sand......
......and lots of rocks.

We opted to keep our shoes on and stay out of the water.
One small piece of fog came rolling in to the north and engulfed a beach house.
We both thought about Stephen King.....

After we left the beach, we took a boardwalk trail back to the farm and enjoyed a walk in the woods.

Amazing fungus growth on this tree.
What do you see?
At an overlook we spotted blueberries!  Look closely
at this picture and you will see them, small and very sweet.
So of course we picked a few!  It wasn't easy since we had to lean over the wooden
railing of the overlook, but we got this many for our breakfast cereal.
YUM!
