July 14, 2016 Fundy Trail drive

Todays adventure was the Fundy Trail drive, which is an out-and-back road along the Bay of Fundy.  There were plenty of overlooks, and midway was the Big Salmon River Interpretive Center.  In the late 1800s and well into the mid-1950s, Big Salmon River was a flourishing logging, fishing and shipbuilding community.  Not much left now, though.

Our first stop was Fuller Falls, which were quite nice but not too big.  The cable stairs were rather interesting, though....  Needless to say I was watching my step carefully going up and down!

Great view of Pangburn Beach, accessible only at low tide.
All picnic lunches come with starving critters....

The suspension bridge was sturdy and practical, not very scary at all.
The road bridge and the suspension walking bridge.
Big Salmon River;  I love to sit and listen to the water making its way over the rocks.
At the end of the parkway was Long Beach.  Wonderful at low tide!!!

Long Beach.
You betcha!  I waded the beach from one end to the other, enjoying every minute.
The water wasn't very cold in the shallows, but it got cold fast if I went past ankle-deep.

July 13, 2016 St. Martins, New Brunswick, Canada

After leaving Maine, we headed into Canada and the Bay of Fundy.  We love this part of Canada and this time, we stayed in the picturesque town of St. Martins.  Small and beautiful!  Our campground was right on the Bay so we had a ringside seat for the water UP and the water DOWN.  Around the bend from our campground were some sea caves, which we examined.  Here you go:

Our newest flag:  half America, half Canada.  Since we are so fond of Canada, it seemed perfect!
Still working on a way to display this flag.
The sea caves at low tide.
These caves were not small!

Covered bridge at St. Martins Harbor - at almost high tide.  Notice the boat is floating.
Same scene, at low tide.....
Perfect!  Covered bridge and a huge pile of lobster trap buoys.
Sea caves in the background.

The wild roses are just gorgeous...

Fog rolling in right in front of our camper.

July 18, 2014 Hopewell Rocks (The Flowerpots), New Brunswick, Canada

This place is amazing!  The abnormally high tides (30-50 feet) allow people to walk around on the floor of the Bay of Fundy during low tide.  But the part that blew my mind was going back at high tide and seeing just how far up the water came.  This phenomenon is unique to the Bay of Fundy because it acts like a giant funnel, and the tides are more extreme because of it.  We had a grand old time exploring around on the "bottom of the ocean";  it was mostly rocky and gravelly with lots of red mud out by the water.  This place was packed with people so there are folks in almost every picture we took.

On the walk down to the shore, we saw quite a few of these ghostly little guys called Indian Pipe.
It's a flowering plant that has no chlorophyll and sustains itself on fungus of tree roots.
(or something like that)  Not something you see every day!

Plenty of green seaweed around.

A little explanation....

Low Tide.

High Tide at the same place!
