September 16-21, 2015 The long drive home.....

Every wonderful summer trip comes to an end, and so we are now headed towards home.  Here are some random images from our six-day drive east.....  Til next year, my friends!

Stopped in Albuquerque long enough to have an early lunch with my
long-time friend and co-worker (now retired!) Charlotte, and her friend Mike.
Where we ate in Albuquerque - the Owl Cafe.   (pesky street light!)
Driving through canyonlands area and found a BIG boulder beside the road.
How I feel about being in the canyonlands area....
The Vermillion Cliffs.  Gotta tell ya, they were mighty RED.
"Scattered thunderstorms"
Taken from about 7000 ft.
Two steps in The Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument, first the white and then the red.

Oh lookie here!  Lava on the roadside - again!  This stuff is everywhere out west...
Those crazy buried Cadillacs at Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, Texas.
How's this for irony?  Wind turbines, and coal train destined for a power plant.
"Clean" energy and "dirty" energy.

September 15, 2015 Zion National Park, Utah

We went back into Zion National Park today and did a little hiking in the rain.  (first we got some rain ponchos, altho Bubba ended up not wearing his so he could take pictures)  We rode the park shuttle to the last stop and hiked the Riverside Walk Trail up to The Narrows hiking trail begins.  We did the 2 mile roundtrip hike in the rain, and it was spectacular!  We saw waterfalls that most people don't get to see.  Today the Virgin River was running at about 500 CFM (cubic feet per minute);  normal is about 55 CFM.  (note:  the flash flood yesterday was at 2600 CFM)

The water was as much mud as it was water....

Beginning of The Narrows hiking trail.
Rainy-day waterfalls.
Riverside Walk trail.
Fantastic waterfall, only on rainy days....
The Great White Throne.

Next we rode the shuttle down to the Zion Lodge and the Emerald Pools trail.  Still raining but we went anyhow.  The trail was paved, but with mud!  It was a nice hike up to some waterfalls, but guess what:  they were in full rainy-day flow and it was very thrilling to walk the trail behind them as they thundered and roared!  Bubba took a couple pictures, but it was difficult with mist and water everywhere.  We never made it to the actual pools - we were both cold and wet and Zion Lodge Cafe was nearby with hot coffee and shelter from the weather....

Happy hiker and happy camper!
Our shoes show that we had fun today!

September 14, 2015 Zion National Park, severe storm

Today we had a short drive to our campground outside Zion National Park, so we made our first foray into the park after lunch.  It was 12 twisty miles on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway through Pine Creek Canyon into the main park, including a 1.1 mile tunnel.  With no lighting inside, they cut "galleries" (windows) into the side of the tunnel in several places.

On our drive to the park, one of the first features we saw were the "checkerboard mesas", which were quite odd-looking.  See below....

Finally we got into Zion National Park proper.  This amazing canyon was carved by the north fork of the Virgin River.  We parked at the visitor center and went inside to gather up the necessary maps and information.  One of the things we noticed is that "The Narrows" was closed due to high water after some rainy days.

While we were hiking up the short Archaeology Trail across from the visitor center, we noticed this storm approaching, so we hot-footed it for the truck.

And it's a mighty good thing we did, because that storm came blasting through like gangbusters!  We watched big winds thrashing all the trees in the parking lot, breaking limbs and stripping leaves.  The rain came pelting down in sheets, and then it turned to hail.  We moved the truck under a tree in case the hailstones got really big, but they never did.  We finally headed back to the campground after the worst of the storm had passed.  And the entire 12 miles was like these pictures show:  lots and lots of mud-laden rain runoff onto the road, including rocks and tree debris.  It was a VERY interesting and slow drive.....

After the fact, we learned that this weather system caused flash flooding on the Virgin River and that there were multiple deaths, including hikers in Zion.  So sad to hear this.  So amazed at the sheer power of water!  It can carve canyons, and it can kill.....

September 13, 2015 Bryce Canyon National Park

Trust me:  no picture can do justice to this place.  The "wow factor" is quite intense.  Never saw so many hoodoos in my life!  Totally fascinating place.  This is all created by the power of water and the winter freezing & thawing actions.  Plus wind.  Sandstone is soft and easily eroded, hence this place exists.  These are a bunch of random images from the main canyon and also the overlooks along the way.  There were lots of hikes to take, including some down in the canyon, but we just never had enough time for a 2-hour hike.  Someday.....

These reminded me of chess pieces.

Hope you can enlarge and see this interesting graphic.

Thor's Hammer.

This was called the natural bridge, but technically it's an arch.

The end!
