August 15, 2013 Rialto Beach, near La Push/Forks, Washington

Today we wandered down to Rialto Beach.  It is on the north side of the mouth of the Quillayute River, at La Push, Washington.  This is a rocky, seaweedy, driftwoody, wild kind of place (even though there were plenty of folks there).  We absolutely LOVE these kind of beaches, because they are totally opposite of our familiar hot sandy Gulf beaches.  We were there at the end of the day, as the sun set and dusk fell, and the fog came tip-toeing in.

View towards the Quillayute River.
The large rock out there (James Island) is called a-ka-lat in the Quileute language;
it means "top of the rock" and is sacred to the Quileute tribal members.

Ravens and crows everywhere we go....

Rialto Beach is all rocks.  Smooth.  Flat.

Rialto Beach is also full of driftwood.  (think:  whole trees)
Here is a bump on a log.....

Clambering around on the stacks of driftwood.

ANOTHER bump on a log.

As evening falls, the mist/fog begins to creep ashore.

Fog on the sea stacks.

MORE bumps on a log....

Everywhere there are rocks, we have seen cairns that people have made.
Here is one on top of a piece of driftwood tree trunk.

  2. At first I thought this was a long-distance shot and the cairn was an evergreen! Cool photo.
