July 22, 2016 Melanson Settlement, Nova Scotia

This was a spur-of-the-moment side trip we took today, and what a prize-winner!  We visited the Melanson Settlement.  Even though these pictures show a whole lot of nothing, it was surprisingly moving to us, walking around out there in those open lands where a whole settlement was once busy with life.  We were imagining the cozy little houses, the orchards, the gardens, the people - and all gone with nothing left except this beautiful place above the river.  So I'm posting these pictures as a tribute to those brave and very hardworking French people who came here 400+ years ago and made a good life before being exiled to other places.

Don't know what kind of shrub/tree this is, but it had some killer thorns on it.
