July 23, 2016 Brier Island drive, Nova Scotia

This was another driving day.  We got ourselves down to Digby, then drove the peninsula down to the very end, via two small ferries, hopping from the mainland to Long Island to Brier Island.  St. Mary's Bay on one side, and the Bay of Fundy on the other.  What a stellar day, another prize-winner!  We never just drive - we stop at every wayside and overlook and side road....

Our first stop was called "High Cliff Look Off" at Gulliver's Cove.  We think there might have been a trail up to the top of that cliff, but we weren't up for that particular challenge.  It was a most beautiful spot, and there were benches and even a picnic table.

Gulliver's Cove and the High Cliff.
Sea lions basking.
Great huge drifts of fireweed, so dramatic.

Next stop along the way was Sandy Beach, aptly named.  Sandy beaches are somewhat rare in this part of the world, most beaches are 100% rock, so the sandy spots are usually very popular.....

Sandy beach.  There were people and kids and dogs here today.
Lots of rope on this beach....  Some of it was in good shape, but who wants to untangle it?  Not us.

Next stop was Long Island, via a small ferry across the Petite Passage.  We had to pay attention to the ferry schedules for both islands, to avoid waiting a whole hour for a ride across the water.

Not a big ferry...
Nannie does love a boat ride.....
Lighthouse we saw from the ferry.  This is the standard model lighthouse we
saw all over Nova Scotia, square white with red top.

While on Long Island, we stopped and hiked down to the Balancing Rock.  It was a nice hike, not withstanding the 235 steps up and down....

Do you see me down there?
Pretty amazing, eh?

After another short ferry hop, we were on Brier Island, the end of the line.  We drove out to the final lighthouse and found this Ever Growing Rock Pile.  Ya just never know what you're gonna find....

Have I mentioned the wildflowers?  So beautiful, and plentiful.
Fisherman clothes on the line at an old homestead.
A lighthouse of a different stripe, different from all the little square white red-top ones....
This is not the best picture, but I wanted to show you how it looks when you ride
a ferry at low tide.  Steep ramps on and off, and interesting stuff on the bulkhead walls....
