August 6, 2016 Desert of Maine, Freeport, Maine

Camped right outside of Freeport, Maine, and decided to check out this local "attraction".  Turned out to be pretty interesting!  The Desert of Maine was man-made, caused by poor farming techniques and then overgrazing by sheep.  It's slowly being reclaimed by forest.  The glacial silt ("sand") has a lot of mica in it and it's very glittery in the sun.  Enjoyed this.

Top of the tallest "dune".  You can see how sand has buried the trees.

  1. Eventually the sand will kill those trees, making the desert ever larger.
