August 8, 2012 Long Beach, Washington

Long Beach is on a peninsula on the north side of where the Columbia River enters the Pacific Ocean. Today we stopped at a cranberry farm & museum, then drove up the peninsula to the community at the northern end, named Oysterville. There we bought a couple of dungeness crabs and ate 'em right there. YUM! Then we wandered down to the bottom of the peninsula, where Lewis & Clark finished their quest. What a great day!

The cranberry grows on a vine - didn't know that! Harvest is in October.

Lunch at Oysterville, Washington!

The building was once an oyster cannery....

Oyster shells, anyone? This is the North Head lighthouse (still working), and we were able to climb up to the top where a volunteer explained all about it to us. Great view!

The Cape Disappointment lighthouse, which is manned by the Coast Guard and no visitors allowed. A view of the north jetty.

Here we are, clambering around on this massive jetty. From on top of it, we watched a sea lion eating a fish, and we saw a large fin break the water repeatedly. After talking to several folks, we found out it was a cold-water dolphin.
