After we left the Miscou Lighthouse, we spotted this sign "Sentier tourbiere" and stopped. It means Peat Bog Boardwalk. What a lovely spot! I don't think there are many peat bogs down south where we live, so it was interesting to see a great big one. Places like this is where they "harvest" the peat that goes into those bags that we get at the plant nursery places for potting our plants.... I don't think I'll ever buy it again, after seeing the kind of damage it does to the peat bog environment.
We saw flowers and peat and lots-lots of berries, mostly blueberries of various types. Only found one spot of our familiar "rabbit-eye" type blueberries, but they all tasted good. I kept wishing I could wade out there into those huge patches of berry bushes and do a bit of harvesting, but alas, twas not proper (or safe) to leave the boardwalk. Here are a few pics for ya:
Signage.....
Overview of the boardwalk in the peat bog.
Enlarge and read this. It explains about the harvesting of the peat and the environment.
One of the many ponds; this one has some kind of not-yet-open water lily blossoms.
Whole lotta flat with ponds.
Two different kinds of blueberries; the dark ones on the bush and the little rabbit-eye kind in Bubba's hand. Of course we ate 'em!
Raspberries too!

And of course one of our favorites, pitcher plants.
The pitcher plants are very short; that's a blossom on the lower right.p

Peat bog from up on the boardwalk....
......and up close.

These flowers are everywhere up here; I think they are fireweed.
Cattails, too!

I tried to read the enlarged photo, but it wasn't easy. Do you know if the bogs are replenished as peat is removed?
ReplyDeletePeat takes years and years to form.... so no, I don’t think so. They are finally regulated, I think. We could see huge tracts of scraped earth by looking at the area on satellite....
