Today's adventure was another visit to
Campobello Island, Canada. It's right across the water from Eastport, Maine but to drive there takes an hour!
Campobello Island has two lighthouses, and on this visit we went back to see the East Quoddy Head lighthouse, which is accessible on foot only at low tide. Otherwise you'll need a boat. Once again, we managed to show up when the tide was coming in, so alas: no walking over to the lighthouse for us. It's still an amazing spot. Across the bay is Maine. Out in the middle of the bay we saw a minke whale going back and forth as it was feeding, and of course dolphins cavorting around, and also one seal raised it's head to say howdy. We lingered a good while here, watching the whale and just enjoying the view as the tide poured in.

| No longer manned, it's long been automated. |
 |
| The stairs are closed when the tide is in. |
 |
| The tides here are pretty high and move in and out at a good clip. |

This big boy came into the bay towards Eastport. We were told it carries LNG, which is what goes in all those tanks that keep homes warm in winter. |
 |
On the other side of East Quoddy Head we saw these circular things in the water; found out they are salmon farms. |
The island is also home to the
Roosevelt Campobello International Park. The Roosevelts kept a summer cottage here and spent many summers enjoying the fresh air and waters. It was also here where FDR came down with the polio that left him crippled. This park includes cottage tours and historical information, plus a whole peninsula of carriage roads and hiking trails. We drove down to Liberty Point and then hiked out to Ragged Point to see the Sunsweep Sculpture. Just wonderful!

We opted to enjoy being outside instead of touring the Roosevelt cottage, so here's a picture for ya. |
 |
We went down to Liberty Point in the International Park, and immediately we both put on our extra shirts. You can see how the wind blows here all the time. |

The trail out to Ragged Point was like this most of the way. I started to feel like a train on the tracks! Look closely on the right-hand side of the tracks..... |
 |
| A nice view from Ragged Point. |

And THIS, my friends, is what a whole lot of Route 1 looks like around here. I drove our camper through this for quite a ways, white-knuckled. Yikes. |
Oh yes, we enjoyed the hike to the Sunsweep Sculpture, altho we remember the rickety "tracks" with disdain. I loved seeing all the flowers. Looks like you picked a good day to be out there. Great pics!
